Dear Blue Waters Partner -
This is a reminder that Blue Waters will end production at midnight on December 31, 2021. Please make plans now to complete the transfer of your data from Blue Waters prior to December 31, 2021, as we cannot guarantee there will be an extended access grace period after that date. All queued and running jobs will be removed when the system is shutdown (most likely on Jan 3 around noon CT).
Support availability will be very limited after December 23rd due to the holiday break. Please begin making plans now to transfer your data.
Details on data transfer options are posted on the Blue Waters portal at https://bluewaters.ncsa.illinois.edu/data-transfer-doc including use of Globus AWS and Google Drive connectors.
Illinois users, please see https://bluewaters.ncsa.illinois.edu/illinois-data-transfer for some additional storage options.
Please send your questions to help+bw@ncsa.illinois.edu.
Thank you,
The Blue Waters Team

Blue Waters Partners:
Summary:
- Globus command line interface issue is resolved.
- Shifter software upgrade on 6/18/2020
- Reminder: Portal dynamic data interruption on 6/12/2020
- The Globus issue experienced when using the command line interface provided by bwpy/2.0.2 has been resolved without a need for any local updates, as changes performed by Globus outside of Blue Waters resolved the issue.
-
On Thursday, June 18, 2020, we will be updating Shifter module from version 16.08.3 to 18.03.4. The new version will provide a number of stability improvements and enables local user images. When complete, the "shifter" GRES specification will remain valid, but shifter16 will be disabled.
Documentation will be updated at that point to reflect the changes.
https://bluewaters.ncsa.illinois.edu/shifter
Shifter jobs that are already running at that time are unlikely to encounter issues, but it is possible in some circumstances. If this happens, you can resubmit the job using the "shifter" GRES as documentation will reflect once the change is performed.

Valued partners and collaborators,
NCSA is doing our part to protect the health and wellbeing of our employees and the community. Therefore, we have taken the necessary steps to help minimize the risk of infection, including transitioning our staff to working remotely. These measures are to protect our team and to practice the social distancing advised by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
Despite these extraordinary circumstances, NCSA and the National Petascale Computing Facility (NPCF) remain fully operational and will continue to provide resources, services, and research support to our partners. We will adhere to our standard interaction methods, maintenance practices, and schedules. Furthermore, we will continue to monitor and adjust operations so NPCF’s full capabilities remain available. Please contact us for support using the established contacts and channels for your resource needs.
NCSA will follow the remote-work protocol mandated by the University of Illinois until the restrictions are lifted. In the event there is a significant change that affects our ability to provide services, we will be sure to inform our partners.
We are grateful for your understanding, support, and continued scientific partnership during these unprecedented times.
Please contact help+bw@ncsa.illinois.edu with questions or concerns.

Hello Blue Waters Partners,
The Blue Waters nearline (tape) subsystem will be permanently shutdown March 31, 2020. This is a hard deadline with no extension possible as NCSA is contractually obligated to remove the controlling software and metadata following the shutdown since we will no longer have the right to use that software. If your team has data on Nearline that you wish to keep, this is your last opportunity to retrieve that data!
Projects that expired in December 2019 are also approaching the end of the 90-day grace period for online data. If you have such a project, the precise end of the grace period is included in emails you will receive specifically for that project. Once the grace period expires, the Lustre /projects/ project space will be removed and accounts (including respective home directories) that are not members of a different, active, project will be removed from the system. Short grace period extensions are possible with a well-justified request made via help+bw@ncsa.illinois.edu by the principle investigator for the project.
For data transfer questions with Globus Online please see https://bluewaters.ncsa.illinois.edu/data-transfer-doc.
For transfers to your academic Google Drive or to an AWS S3 object see https://bluewaters.ncsa.illinois.edu/data-transfer-doc#googledrive and https://bluewaters.ncsa.illinois.edu/data-transfer-doc#aws respectively.

Hello Blue Waters Partners,
This is a reminder that the Blue Waters nearline (tape) system will be permanantly shutdown and dismantled on 4/1/2020 (no extension is possible). A rush on data retrieval is expected as the end of nearline service approaches which will be limited by the retrieval throughput of nearline. Thus, if you have data on nearline that you wish to keep you must transfer it to other storage ASAP.
All projects that expired on 12/19/2019 are currently in their 90 day grace period. At the end of that grace period, those projects will be deactivated. As part of that process, any accounts that no longer are part of an active project will also be closed and data associated with those accounts removed. If your project/account is expired please ensure any data that you want keep is transferred to other storage off of Blue Waters ASAP.
Please mail help+bw@ncsa.illinois.edu with questions, problems, or anticipated problems.

Hello Blue Waters partners,
Today marks the conclusion of regular NSF Blue Waters operations and allocations. Allocations ending today will be granted the normal 90 day grace period to transfer data off Blue Waters storage systems. After today, jobs remaining in the queue will be permitted to run but job submission will be disabled for expired projects.
As Blue Waters transitions to support changing workflow needs for the NGA phase of operations, several policies and processes will be adjusted. Though they are detailed in the summary page linked below, additional notices will be issued near key timeframes.
Transition summary: https://bluewaters.ncsa.illinois.edu/transition
If you have questions about any changes, please submit a service request as normal to help+bw@ncsa.illinois.edu, but keep in mind that the upcoming holiday period may not have typical business hour response.
As a final note, the Blue Waters staff has thoroughly enjoyed the challenges, innovations, enthusiasm, and breakthrough science experienced over the last seven years with everyone involved. Best of luck in the next stage of your research!

Maintenance for the Blue Waters Nearline storage system has been rescheduled after passing regression tests: it will undergo maintenance starting on Thursday, February 7th, possibly extending through February 8th. The system will be undergoing a significant software and hardware update that is expected to enhance performance and function. All other Blue Waters subsystems, as summarized below, will remain operational and uninterrupted. Another notification will be issued as the date approaches. Patches have been applied to address an important security issue. The limit changes applied a week ago have been reverted.
Please email help+bw@ncsa.illinois.edu if you encounter any issues.

Blue Waters Users,
Blue Waters has been returned to service after a security update and programming environment update. CUDA 9.1 is now available as the default cudatoolkit but with gcc/4.9.3 remaining as the default GNU compiler. The default programming environment otherwise did not change to allow for an extended transition to the newer programming environment.
For a complete discussion of the changes to the Programming Environment please see the Programming Environment (PE) Changes portal page.
This is an extensive programming environment update and as such there will be issues we did not discover in advance. Please report issues to help+bw@ncsa.illinois.edu.
-Blue Waters Project
A new Programming Environment was installed as a non-default and will be made default after a test period and subsequent announcement.
CUDA notes: XK nodes will receive CUDA update (and associated driver) to version 9.1. CUDA 7.5 will still be available as non-default. CUDA 7.5 binaries have tested successfully in the CUDA 9.1 environment, but it may be necessary to recompile. sm_20 and compute_20 are deprecated in any build or makefile setup. People should use sm_35 and/or compute_35 to best match our Kepler K20x GPUs.

Blue Waters Users,
Please note the following scheduled maintenance update:
The scheduled maintenance for CUDA 9.1 deployment on Blue Waters has been expanded to a near full system service outage that will span 13 hours on Monday July 16th, from 9am to 10pm. This adjustment will eliminate the need for an additional scheduled maintenance period. To maximize availability, login nodes and filesystems will remain in service during the maintenance. The expanded activities include hardware maintenance, operating system software update roll ups, and some preventative maintenance to maximize future stability. Major changes are still the Programming Environment and CUDA 9.1 depoloyments originally planned.

Blue Waters Users,
We will take advantage of the scheduled Globus outage (Saturday, December 9th from 10am to 2pm) to perform maintenance on the Blue Waters Nearline system. The Nearline maintenance is expected to conclude by 4pm. Blue Waters login and compute systems will be unaffected.
You should have received an email from Globus.org regarding an upcoming Globus outage. This globus-wide outage will impact access to endpoints ncsa#BlueWaters and ncsa#Nearline.
Please be advised that the Globus service will be unavailable on Saturday, December 9, 2017, between 10:00am and 2:00pm CST while we conduct scheduled upgrades. Active file transfers will be suspended during this time and they will resume when the Globus service is restored. Users trying to access the service at globus.org (or on your institution's branded Globus website) will see a maintenance page until the service is restored.
Please plan accordingly. Blue Waters will be accessible via login nodes and jobs will continue to run during this time.
Updates will be posted to Blue Waters system blog as we learn them from Globus.org.
See https://www.globus.org/blog/scheduled-downtime-december-9-2017 for details from Globus.org.
